September Meeting

           After the previous weekend's Ordeal, we saw a swell in meeting attendence this month.  The Chapter was visited by members of the District and Council Emergency Prepardness Committee.  Rob Kyker, thanked the Chapter for their involvement with other Arrowmen in Dallas in the local relief efforts following the devastation of hurricane Katrina.  As a gesture of gratitude, Mr. Kyker presented his Emergency Prepardness Lapel Pin, which was issued to him by Chief Scout Executive Roy Williams, to our Chapter Chief, Matt Caanen.


At the Ordeal a couple of Yanush members were up to receive a chapter service hat.  The recipients were Andrew Meaders(above left) and Jim Slaughter(above right).  The unique hats are given to any Yanush member that serves on staff at two or more Ordeals.  The hats cannot be purchased and are only awarded to Yanush Chapter members.
           The topic of this month was Native American Ceremonies and Regalia.  On hand to teach the Yanush members about this subject were ceremonies gurus, Jim Slaughter(right) and John Moses(left), from Ogequah Chapter.  Mr. Moses talked about the ways in which Arrowmen can get involved in ceremonies and regalia making, while Mr. Slaughter talked about the meanings and symbolisms in ceremonies as well as comparing an old Yanush buffalo headdress to a Russian Ushanka.


           In order to give members a good idea of what a ceremony looks like(from left to right), Ethan Ward, Nathan DeLamar, Frank Cusimano, and Andy Kooiman all performed part of the Ordeal ceremony.  Afterward, much of the meanings behind each characters' lines were explained and there was a brief lecture about the clothing that each character wears, as well as the significance thier headdresses.  There was a lot that was covered at the meeting, however, there is a lot more about ceremonies and regalia that can be learned.  Ceremonies are relatively easy to start learning and many arrowmen start out in Arrow of Light Ceremonies for cub packs and then move on to Ordeal and Brotherhood ceremonies.  If any Yanush youth member is interested in getting involved with ceremonies they should get in contact with us.  Overall, the meeting was a big success and many thanks to those who showed up and those who helped organize and run this month's activity.  See everyone in October.
